Verbands-Jugend-Prüfung (VJP) – Young Dog Test
The VJP test takes place in the spring and is designed for young Drahthaar dogs between 6 and 18 months old. Puppies born between January and September typically test the following spring, while those born from October to December test the year after. This is the first formal evaluation of a young dog's natural abilities, assessing their instinctive skills in searching, pointing, and tracking. The test emphasizes foundational training and innate hunting instincts, including independent searching, steady pointing, and live rabbit tracking.

Verbands-Herbstzucht-Prüfung (HZP) – Fall Breed Test
The HZP is an advanced natural ability test for Drahthaars that have successfully completed the VJP. This evaluation focuses on the dog's proficiency in searching, pointing, and retrieving while assessing key traits such as nose quality, drive, and cooperation. The test includes land and water retrieves, gun sensitivity assessment, and live duck searches. Dogs must demonstrate steady pointing, holding their position until the handler is within gun range.

Verbands-Gebrauchsprüfung (VGP) – Utility Test
The VGP is the highest level of JGHV testing, designed for fully trained, "finished" Drahthaars. This comprehensive evaluation assesses a dog's skills in blood tracking, pointing, searching, retrieving on both land and water, and overall obedience. The test includes rigorous tasks such as tracking wounded hoofed game, retrieving furred game from drag tracks, retrieving over obstacles, and conducting independent forest searches. Only dogs that have passed the HZP are eligible, and each dog may attempt the VGP a maximum of two times.
